Cameroon announced on Sunday that its second regional elections were conducted across the country without notable security incidents or major disruptions.
Elections Cameroon (ELECAM), the independent national electoral commission said voting proceeded smoothly in most polling stations, with early reports pointing to orderly queues, transparent ballot handling, and timely results in several regions.
Observers from domestic civil society groups and a limited number of international monitors praised the process for relative efficiency and adherence to established procedures, while noting minor logistical hiccups in a handful of remote areas that were quickly addressed by election officials.
Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji in a press statement, emphasized that the elections mark a continued commitment to decentralization, with parties and voters engaging in peaceful campaigning and voter education campaigns ahead of polling day. Turnout figures were not immediately released, but authorities urged citizens to remain engaged as results unfold.
Paul Atanga Nji described the day as a testament to Cameroon’s resilience in expanding regional governance, while analysts caution that ongoing post-election reforms and inclusivity must be sustained to maintain public confidence in future polls.
