A government communiqué issued by the Minister of Communication, Emmanuel René Sadi, contends that the European Union Delegation’s public statements following the death of Anicet Ekane amount to unfounded interference and a mischaracterization of events.
In a statement dated December 1, the Minister of Communication, Government Spokesperson rejected the EU’s criticism of how political actors’ safety and rights are being handled in Cameroon. The communiqué asserts that no foreign mission, including the EU, may dictate policy or interfere in the sovereign affairs of the Republic, describing such actions as unacceptable.
The government’s reply also challenges the EU’s claims of excessive use of force, human rights violations, and arbitrary arrests by Cameroonian security forces.
It states that individuals detained after the October 12, 2025 presidential election results were involved in serious public order disturbances that caused property damage and, in some regions, loss of life.
According to Mr Sadi, an investigation is underway, aimed at establishing responsibility with objectivity and accountability based on verified facts.
The government argues that there is no basis for assertions of arbitrary arrests or rights violations while the investigation is ongoing.
The government urged the EU Delegation to exercise restraint and to focus on fostering a cooperative and mutually respectful relationship between the European Union and Cameroon.
Both the Ministers in charge of Defence and that of Territorial Administration have earlier come out with statement’s saying that Mr Ekane was well taken care of while in detention by security and defence forces as well as his personal doctors.
