The government of Cameroon through the ministry of defence has signed an important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with her Nigerian counterpart.
The newly signed MoU as a strategic upgrade to mutual security along their shared southern border and in Gulf of Guinea waters was signed on Tuesday, June 16 in Yaounde. By prioritizing enhanced coordination, intelligence sharing, and joint training, it aims to bolster sovereignty and regional stability.
The agreement signed between the Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Joseph Beti Assomo and the Minister of Defence of the Federal Republic of Nigeria also signals Cameroon’s commitment to robust defence collaboration, including logistics support and personnel exchanges, to respond more effectively to evolving security threats.
Speaking after signing the MoU, minister Joseph Beti Assomo traced the fact that Cameroon and Nigeria over the years, have remained brotherly nations and have cooperated in diverse areas. He said Nigerian uniform officers are being trained at the International War College in Cameroon while those of Cameroon are also trained in Nigeria.
Nigeria’s defence minister’s perspective
Nigeria’s Defence Minister Gen Christopher Musa describes the MoU as a structured, institutionalized framework for closer military cooperation. He highlights the plan to operationalize the Combined Maritime Joint Task Force to safeguard maritime interests and bolster economic security in the Gulf of Guinea. Musa also stresses expanding defence-industry collaboration, technology transfer, and innovation under Nigeria’s Defence Industries Corporation, signaling a push for stronger regional industrial partnerships.

The core elements of the MOU included terrestrial and maritime security collaboration, intelligence sharing and joint operational coordination, logistics support and joint training, personnel exchange programs, mechanisms for collective response to security threats, defence technology cooperation and potential manufacturing partnerships

The pact follows two days of expert discussions and represents a milestone in Cameroonian-Nigerian relations, underscoring a shared commitment to regional peace and sovereignty. It comes amid recent security tensions in the region, underscoring the need for coordinated, transparent approaches to border and maritime security.
