The Government of Cameroon has again renews its commitment of making governance a developmental priority. Governance, decentralisation and the strategic management of the State is a key pillar of the National Development Strategy 2020-2030 launched early this week by the Government.

The National Development Strategy 2020-2030 acknowledges the importance of governance in realizing its objectives “Achieving the development objectives and realising the objectives envisaged within the framework of this strategy depend, to a large extent, on the quality of the rules, institutions and people in charge of implementing actions and strategic platforms. Thus governance is the mainstay on which the structural reforms of the Cameroonian economy, development of human potential, as well as improvement of the employment situation depend” The National Development Strategy document states.

The Strategy also recognises the cross-cutting role governance has to play for the other pillars of development to be effective and efficient ” As for the structural transformation of the economy, good governance improves on the business climate and promotes sustainable investments. It enables an equitable competition between operators and brings about a strengthening of the willingness to pay taxes, as well as encourages entrepreneurship and risk-taking by national and international investors. With regards to the development of human potential, quality governance promotes efficiency of health and educational systems in order to produce human resources capable of more easily integrating active life, imbued with the spirit of enterprise “

Giving the numerous challenges the country is facing recently the government things the improvement of governance can remedy the situation ” a productive population that is inculcated with civic and patriotic values is a factor for the improvement of governance at the political, administrative and economic levels, through citizens who are respectful of institutions and norms that govern societal life and who have full mastery of their freedoms and duties and can
participate in shouldering public expenditures and nation building.

The improvement of governance thus become a crucial stake for the government. The reforms the government intends to carry out shall focus on improving decentralization aims at reinforcing local development so that regional and local authorities can become the pivot of growth and development; as well promote the full participation of the people in the management of local affairs , especially the vulnerable and marginalized groups.

Apart from decentralization, the improvement of political and institutional governance through the strengthening of the rule of law and protection of human rights occupies focal point of government previsions..The consolidation of the judiciary and access to faire justice for all,the intensification of the fight against insecurity, crime and terrorism and crises prevention and management are some of the major actions government shall embark on.

As concerning the improvement of state public service, the government seeks to pursue it’s efforts towards the modernisation of public administration by improving the functioning of the public service and the human resources of the state while reinforcing the fight against corruption, embezzlement of public funds and conflict of interest.
In the sphere of Economic and Financial governance, focus will be on the modernisation of the management of public finances by the strengthening of the state entities capacity to prepare the state budget and improve programme budgeting, strengthening the tax compliance and budgetary resources mobilization capacity just to name a few.
Also important to the government is the fostering of regional development and the promotion of bilingualism, multi-culturalism and citizenship.
