Members of the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism have drawn a positive balance sheet of the year 2020.
This was during the Second Bi-annual session of the 2020 financial year. Presided by the President of the Commission Peter Mafany Musonge, the members all present also discussed the perspective for the coming year in the horizon
While opening the meeting, the President, His excellency Peter Mafany Musonge presented a balance sheet of the Commission action plan for 2020, a balance sheet he judged to be positive “Despite the negative impact of the Corona virus pandemic on the plans we made at the start of the year to work harder than ever before, especially on the field, our balance sheet is positive”
This the former prime minister acknowledged is due to the strategy put in place to circumvent the pandemic. This strategy enabled the Commission to continue consultation on issues linked to its missions as well carry out some key activities of its action plan including protocol activities.
As such some activities carried out successfully by the Commission visit to ministerial departments to evaluate and follow up the implementation of the 2019 law on the promotion of official languages in Cameroon, during which the Commission observed that enormous progress has been made in terms of the promotion of bilingualism in the country; the dual mission to listen to the people and also explain and sensitize them on the 2019 law on the promotion of official languages in the Northern regions, which enable the Commission to appreciate the level of liberty of expression in the country and also better understand the challenges the Commission has to overcome in order not to disappoint the confidence of the population; increase in the sensitization of the population on hate speech with the goal to reduce its impact on living together and finally the acceleration of the putting in place of the regional bureaus of the Commission through the rehabilitation of the buildings allocated to the Commission in the ten regions.
Speaking to journalist after the meeting, the President of the Commission said their action plan for 2021 shall focus on fighting hate speech and extending the tentacles of the Commission to the ten regions.
Created in 2017 by Presidential Degree, the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism is an advisory body in charge of assisting the government promotes bilingualism and Multiculturalism. It is responsible amongst others for submitting reports and recommendations on issues relating to the protection and promotion of bilingualism and Multiculturalism to the President of the Republic and the government.
