A high-level state visit to Madrid has put renewed emphasis on deepening diplomatic and economic ties between Spain and Senegal.
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye arrived in Madrid met Spain’s royal family and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, highlighting a clear push to modernize bilateral relations.
The Senegalese president arrived after participating in an international development conference in Seville.
The meetings include a reception in the Palace of the Orient’s prestigious room in the presence of King Felipe VI, underscoring the importance Spain attaches to this collaboration.
Economic and development commitments
Spain plans to boost financial aid to Senegal up to 180 million euros through 2030. The funds are earmarked for water, agriculture, education, and vocational training, representing about 50 million euros more than previous assistance. A new four-year partnership framework was signed by the foreign affairs and economy ministers, aligning with Spain’s support for Senegal’s development plan, Vision Senegal 2050.
Cooperation and regional security
Spain’s interest in strengthened ties with Dakar goes beyond development aid. Madrid sees Senegal as a key partner for monitoring West Africa’s coastlines, a region from which many migrants originate en route to the Canary Islands. This strategic dimension has shaped both countries’ approach to collaboration and migration management.
Public and political reception
The visit has drawn coverage in conservative media, which has criticized the government for increasing aid and for Senegal’s recent hardening of its anti-homosexuality laws. Still, officials in Madrid stress the broader purpose of the partnership, aiming to bolster bilateral political and economic links and foster joint initiatives under the Vision Senegal 2050 framework.
Key moments and agenda
– A large Senegalese delegation accompanies President Faye, including ministers of foreign affairs and economy.
– Signing of a new four-year partnership agreement worth 180 million euros (about 118 billion CFA francs).
