Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima was laid to rest in his village south of the capital on Monday after a state funeral where President Lazarus Chakwera called for an independent inquiry into his death in a recent plane crash. Chilima, along with nine others, tragically lost their lives in the plane crash in Malawi’s northern region of Mzimba.
The funeral took place at the Bingu Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, where Chakwera and other dignitaries paid their final respects to the late vice president. During his speech, Chakwera emphasized the need for an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, stating, “Our tears are a reflection of our desire to understand what caused the delay in locating the plane. I want to assure the people of Malawi that this incident will be thoroughly investigated by independent experts.”
Following an extensive search effort involving hundreds of soldiers, police officers, and forest rangers, the wreckage was eventually found in a forest plantation south of Mzuzu. The plane had been en route from Lilongwe to Mzuzu when it disappeared, with air traffic controllers advising against landing in Mzuzu due to adverse weather conditions.
The funeral proceedings included military honors, with a 19-gun salute and tributes from various dignitaries, including all three former presidents of Malawi. The Chilima family also echoed the call for an independent investigation into the tragic incident.
